France and Sweden sign Frigate contact in Stockholm
Photo: Ambassade de France en Suède

On 31 August, France and Sweden signed a major agreement covering Sweden's acquisition of four Defence and Intervention Frigates (FDI) from French naval shipbuilder Naval Group. Valued at €4.3 billion, the contract represents one of Sweden's most significant defence investments in recent decades and marks an important milestone in French-Swedish industrial cooperation.

The agreement was signed during President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Stockholm, in the presence of Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Alongside the procurement contract, the French and Swedish defence ministers signed a framework agreement aimed at establishing a long-term platform for cooperation on operational matters, defence capabilities and industrial development.

The future Luleå-class frigates, based on the French FDI design, will significantly strengthen Sweden's naval and air-defence capabilities and contribute to maritime security in the Baltic Sea region. The project also includes close collaboration between government agencies and industrial partners in both countries. Beyond its military dimension, the agreement illustrates the growing strategic partnership between France and Sweden and highlights the increasing importance of bilateral cooperation in advanced technology, manufacturing and European resilience.

France and Sweden launch a joint roadmap for space cooperation

At the International Space Summit in Paris on the 9th and 10th of September, France and Sweden announced the launch of a joint roadmap aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in the space sector. The initiative builds on the French-Swedish Strategic Innovation Partnership, renewed in 2024 by President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, and will provide a political framework for future collaboration in both civilian and defence-related space activities.

The roadmap seeks to strengthen European competitiveness, security and independent access to space by combining the expertise, infrastructure and industrial capabilities of both countries. France and Sweden share a long tradition of cooperation in the field and are founding members of the European Space Agency. They are also the only EU Member States with operational space bases through the Guiana Space Centre and the Esrange Space Center.

Beyond its strategic dimension, the agreement is expected to create new opportunities for research institutions, innovation ecosystems and companies operating in advanced technologies. The announcement reflects the increasingly important role of space in Europe's industrial, technological and security ambitions, while further reinforcing the close partnership between France and Sweden.

French tech returns to growth
Photo: Business France
France's innovation ecosystem continues to demonstrate strong momentum despite a challenging economic environment. According to the latest EY x France Digitale Barometer, the country is now home to nearly 18,000 start-ups employing around 530,000 people, while French start-ups raised €4.58 billion during the first half of 2026, representing a 65% increase compared with the same period in 2025.

Artificial intelligence, software and deeptech remain key drivers of growth, while defence and space technologies are attracting increasing investor attention. The report also highlights strong recruitment ambitions across the ecosystem, with 78% of start-ups planning to hire this year.

At the same time, the study points to persistent structural challenges. While French companies continue to perform well domestically, their international growth remains more limited than that of counterparts in the United Kingdom and Germany.

For Swedish companies and investors, France nevertheless remains an attractive market for partnerships, innovation and business development.

France, Sweden and the Ottoman Empire: Artistic Alliances
Photo: Louis Nicolas de Lespinasse (1734 - 1808), « En europeisk ministers måltid hos Storvisiren i Divanen »
The Institut Suédois in Paris is currently hosting France, Suède et Empire ottoman : alliances artistiques, an exhibition exploring the artistic and cultural exchanges that emerged between Western Europe and the Ottoman Empire during the 18th century.

Against a backdrop of shifting diplomatic alliances and shared geopolitical interests, France, Sweden and the Ottoman Empire developed closer relations that encouraged curiosity, travel and cultural dialogue. Through paintings, drawings, engravings and watercolours, the exhibition highlights how artists, diplomats and intellectuals contributed to a rich circulation of ideas and artistic influences across Europe and the Ottoman world.

The exhibition offers visitors a unique perspective on the historical ties connecting France and Sweden while shedding light on a lesser-known chapter of European cultural history. It will remain on display at the Institut Suédois until 1 November 2026.
