France remains Europe’s second-largest patent filer in 2025

France maintained its position as Europe’s second-largest patent filer in 2025, with 10,932 applications submitted to the European Patent Office (EPO). Despite a slight decline of 0.4%, the result reflects stable innovation performance. France ranks sixth globally, confirming its strong standing in an increasingly competitive environment.

Innovation remains concentrated in key sectors. Transport leads, driven by major industrial groups such as Renault, Valeo, and Safran. Meanwhile, digital technologies are growing rapidly, alongside energy and electrical systems linked to the green transition. Geographically, innovation is highly centralised: the Île-de-France region accounts for nearly two-thirds of all patent filings.

Sweden also demonstrates strong innovation performance, ranking as the seventh-largest patent filer in Europe. Together, France and Sweden highlight Europe’s continued strength in innovation and research.

France ranked as the fourth-largest destination for industrial investment

Between 2021 and 2025, France was the world’s fourth-largest destination for industrial investment according to the Trendeo barometer, CESI’s Institute for Reindustrializing, and McKinsey, and received a total of 139 billion dollars in investments. According to the economist Emmanuel Lechypre, France’s attractiveness is primarily due to its geographic location and high-quality infrastructure, including transport and telecommunications. Its workforce and pro-industry economic policies also play a key role, supported by research tax credits, lower taxation, and reduced labor costs.

In addition, France has a major advantage: a strong supply of low-carbon energy, which is particularly important in the age of artificial intelligence.
France ranks after the United States, China and India.
